About aFewHomeTruths
Why House Histories?
In a busy world people are looking for a stylish gift solution which shows they have put thought and love into the present.
House histories combine great design with one of the most cherished things in life – your home.
What was your inspiration for the house histories?
We live next door to where the captain of the Titanic lived – a terrace of 200 year old Regency houses overlooking the River Mersey.
As soon as we moved in I knew I wanted to find out more about the history of the house and surrounding area and the sort of people who lived here. Digging deeper we found links to the Napoleonic Wars and timbers from those ships being used to build the houses - as well as rumours that French prisoners of war were forced to help in the construction.
I put all of this research into a gift for our new neighbour which she loved and aFewHomeTruths was born!
What is involved in producing the house histories?
We carefully consult a wide variety of different sources and media including amongst others, old maps, census returns, gazettes, directories and newspapers, which are then cross referenced to build up as accurate a picture as possible of the property and its surrounding area and the sort of people who lived there.
It is often surprising just how much an area has changed in a relatively short time - often just a few generations can see a dramatic difference in the nature of a neighbourhood.
How did you come up with the designs?
It was important to me that the research should be made into really attractive artwork. People will first of all see a pleasing design on the wall and then are tempted to read more and get drawn into the story of the house.
We’ve currently got two designs – one with a retro newspaper feel and the other a more contemporary layout. For extra fun, the newspaper design can have the advert tailored to the recipient.
Each design includes a personal message to the recipient. We have found our customers often show great imagination when composing these!
A new social service
We have received a great reaction to our house histories. Our favourite feedback so far was from a customer who commented that it was like a “social service” for his 80 year old mum - she just kept re-reading the history, chattering on about growing up and saying “Oh I must tell my friend about that - she won’t know that!”
Availability
